My Renovations is....

... a reflection about real and realized renovations within the Masters of Education (MET) program at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Renovations have occurred within my personal learning, my professional practice and my use of educational technology. This e-portfolio is the culminating 'construction' project for the MET program. Through this e-portfolio, I reflect on personal and professional 'renovations' resulting from theory, practice, learning and teaching experiences throughout the three years of the MET program.
The MET program is a major renovation. Each ETEC course is an individual renovation project. The ETEC 590 (linked here) course provides time, space, collaboration and opportunity to reflect and review my MET renovation to see the overall renewed and refreshed results in my personal and professional skills, abilities, concepts and learning in the field of educational technology.

Why 'renovations' is my metaphor:

In selecting the theme for this electronic portfolio, I searched for a metaphor that is familiar, linked to learning, has personal meaning and brings depth to understanding my MET experience. Since I have been involved in three renovation projects in three schools and have worked through several renovation projects in my own home, this metaphor is real, meaningful and familiar.
In the recent edition of Descant magazine, this theme was further illuminated for me by the words of Mark Kingwell. He states "Education has long been thought a site of renovation, or make-over, such that the unformed person or pupil enters a space of learning and emerges, some years and exercises later, with a refined sensibility" (Vol. 158, 2012, p.152). He continues "Education is, etymologically, a drawing out - e-ducare in the Latin root - but it is also a building up, adding new wings to the human house even as it remakes some of the existing rooms. From the point of view of a teacher, every person is a fixer-upper." As Kingwell notes, "The benefits of this reno project, meanwhile, are considered to be more than mental. Education is supposed to open up new social and financial vistas as well as intellectual ones." Through this notion of renovating self through education, I become the renovation project of the MET program. My intellectual, social and financial vistas are the renovations and remodels resulting from the 'fixing-up' by the instructors, subject, content, experiences and explorations. Thus, the MET renovation project results in the building up and adding of new wings to my human house.

Renovations within a Renovation![]() Each MET course resulted in unique projects within the full renovation process.

Ask an Expert![]() Renovation projects rely on the experience and expertise of those who have done it before. Lessons learned by doing the work and sharing the knowledge are a valuable resource for those who try similar projects. Throughout the MET renovations, I reviewed and revisited many MET participants as well as education and technology 'experts' to learn from their experiences and insights.
